All About Fit Checks: How to Hang with hope&plum’s Educators

Your hope&plum carrier comes with free fit checks! Everyone who has one of our carriers is entitled to free fit checks or consults with our babywearing educator team. These are unlimited - show up with a hope&plum carrier, and we will help you learn how to use it, work on a new skill, or just make sure you and baby are safe and comfy! But what does that really mean and how can fit checks help you on your babywearing journey?

TL;DR:
  • Hope&plum offers free, 15-minute virtual fit checks with babywearing educators for all carrier owners.

  • Fit checks help you learn safe, comfortable, and confident carrier use—no matter your experience level or carrier type.

  • Before booking, know which carrier you’ll use, your baby’s age and size, and your goals for the session.

  • Book online, get email/text reminders, and reconfirm two hours before your appointment.

  • Set up your space with hands-free video visibility, good lighting, and a safe spot for baby during the call.

  • After your fit check, expect a follow-up survey and check-in to support continued learning.

  • Keep learning through hope&plum’s tutorials, educator bios, Facebook group, and social media resources.

Fit Check Basics

Fit checks are free, 15 minute, one-on-one video chats between you and one of our babywearing educators. Anyone can sign up for any number of fit checks to work on babywearing skills with a hope&plum carrier. It doesn’t matter if it’s new or pre-loved. It doesn’t matter if this is your first fit check or your fifth. If you have a hope&plum carrier and need some support, you can sign up for a fit check!

Before You Book

Before you grab that consult time, make sure you know which carrier you want to work on and have a basic idea of your fit goals with that carrier. We’ll also ask for your baby’s age and clothing size as this will help our educator team determine the best way to help you. You should also be ready with a good email and phone number so we can send you the video chat link and some reminders.

How to Schedule

To book a consult, just follow our fit check link and choose a day and time that works for you! Have a special need and don’t see something on the calendar that works? Email our customer service team at hello@hopeandplum.co and let them know why you need an earlier date and time than is available and provide some dates and times that will work for you. We’ll do our best to get you booked! After you book your fit check, you’ll get a separate email with information with how to log in to your consult. Some of our educators use Zoom and some use Google Meet, so be sure to note the type of consult you have and download any necessary apps.

Note those Notifications!

As your fit check appointment approaches, look out for a few notifications from us! About 24 hours beforehand, you should receive a reminder email and text. These are just reminders, and you don’t need to take any further action. Two hours before your consult, you’ll get an email and a text message asking you to reconfirm. This time you have to tell us that you still plan on coming. This helps our team keep track of who to expect and who may need another gentle nudge to get to their fit check. After you reconfirm, it’s a good idea to double check whether you’ll be meeting with our educator on Zoom or on Google Meet and double check that whatever device you’re planning to use has access to the correct platform.

Set up for Success

Set up your phone, laptop, or tablet somewhere where you can be handsfree and your educator can see your whole torso. We’d love to see your beautiful face too, but your torso is more important to check on your babywearing fit. Make sure you can easily set baby down somewhere safe during your consult as you won’t be holding them the whole time. If you can find a quiet place with little to no interruptions, that would be helpful, but not a necessity. Many people also like setting themselves up near a mirror so they can see what they’re doing. If you’re planning to work on a back carry, it would be a good idea to set up near a soft surface like a bed or couch or have another adult available to spot you and baby.

It’s a good idea to log in to your consult a few minutes beforehand so you know your video call will work with both video and audio. You can also test how your set up captures you, your baby, and your carrier.

Unless you already have a good idea of what you’re doing or you’re tuning in for a follow-up fit check, start with your carrier off but within reach and your baby in a safe place off your body.

After Your Fit Check

Look out for some more communication from your favorite baby carrier team! We’ll be sending over a short survey about your fit check experience. Our educators frequently will also send an email to check in with how you’re doing after your consult and after you have some additional time to practice. Your responses to both of these emails help us understand what we’re doing right, what we can improve, and whether you may need more help! We’re here for you, so let us know how we’re doing and what you need!
