Babywearing 101: Ring Sling Versus Stretchy Baby Wrap

There's truly nothing better than babywearing and having your little one cuddled close to your heart, at the perfect kissing distance. Parents have worn their babies for thousands of years, promoting bonding and a sense of well-being for mother and child. If you've decided to use a baby carrier, let's start by saying, great choice! The closeness and comfort you and your baby will feel are beyond compare!

One question you will undoubtedly face is what type of carrier to choose: ring sling versus stretchy baby wrap. While there are similarities, there are also differences to consider; let's take a closer look at both, so you can decide which is right for you!

The Short Version

  • Ring slings and stretchy wraps share the essentials: both are hands-free, comfortable and soothing, secure and adjustable, and easy to fold up and travel with, and both work from 7 lbs.
  • The ring sling uses less fabric (about 2-2.5 yards vs. 4.7-5.7 for a wrap), tightens through two rings in seconds, and stays useful through early toddlerhood.
  • The stretchy wrap takes a little practice to tie but gives a snug, womb-like hold that's especially loved in the newborn stage.
  • Bottom line: reach for the ring sling if you want something quick and long-lasting, reach for the wrap if you want that cozy newborn snuggle feel.
  • Prefer more structure? hope&plum's buckle carriers (Sprout, Baby Lark, Kid Lark) cover newborn through kid stages with an apron-style waistband and inclusive sizing.
  • Either way, you can't go wrong: shop ring slings, wraps, or the full carrier lineup to find your fit.

What Is A Ring Sling?

Just as the name suggests, a ring sling is a long piece of fabric containing two rings at the shoulder, which you can use to create a sling for your baby to sit inside. These safety rings allow you to safely and securely carry your baby, without worry, since they will not allow the fabric to slip or unravel during use. Parents love them for their convenience, simplistic design, and ease of use while out and about. hope&plum offers ring slings for plus size as well as straight size caregivers. What Is A Stretchy Baby Wrap?

A stretchy baby wrap carrier is a long piece of fabric with some stretch that you wrap around your body and tie to create a pouch to hold your baby. Many parents love using wraps in the newborn stage as it creates a “womb-like” feeling for their baby. hope&plum designs stretchy baby wraps for plus size and straight size parents. Take advantage of this helpful article to learn more about using a baby wrap carrier!

What They Share Ring sling and stretchy wrap: 5 things they have in common Both are wonderful, size-inclusive ways to keep baby close. Tap each one to see what you can expect from either carrier.
Both let you carry hands-free, which can be a lifesaver. Settle baby inside, and they rest safely and comfortably on your chest while you work, clean, and run errands.
Babies thrive on physical touch. Either carrier instantly soothes little ones and helps them drift off to sleep, while evenly distributing baby's weight to give your arms a break.
Both give a secure hold that keeps baby in place without restricting movement. Tighten or loosen to fit your and your baby's unique size and shape for a truly customized fit. This means they're both great baby carriers for larger bodies or sharing between small and big partners.
Because both are fully adjustable, they mold to fit your body perfectly. That flexibility is ideal for growing babies, so you can wear your carrier from birth onward.
Both are, in essence, long pieces of fabric, so they fold up small and tuck into a diaper bag, car, stroller, or suitcase. Lightweight and easy to travel with, they are a perfect option when flying.

Ring Sling versus Stretchy Baby Wrap FAQ

Can I use a ring sling and baby wrap for my newborn?

Both ring slings and baby wrap carriers are safe for newborn babies and an excellent way to comfort them as they adjust to the outside world. Since both options provide ample support, even the tiniest babies can benefit from the bond babywearing creates. Whether you're a new parent, learning how to juggle household chores and caring for a newborn, or have one or more children already and need to integrate your newest bundle into your existing routine, a ring sling or baby wrap can save the day!

Do baby wraps come in different sizes?

We know that parents come in all different shapes and sizes, and we believe baby wraps should too! Our wraps come in two sizes to ensure the perfect fit for all bodies. Our short length is 4.7 yards and great for parents up to a size L, while our long length has 5.7 yards and is comfortable for parents up to size 6X!

Do ring slings provide enough support for my baby?

Ring slings provide ample support for even the littlest babies without the unnecessary bulkiness of more ridged carrier options. Your baby will have the necessary support on the neck, back, and hips when fitted correctly to stay safe and comfortable.

Which carrier is best for my toddler?

Ring slings are the winner for toddlers. A ring sling hip carry is quick and easy for all those toddler ups and downs. Both our ring slings and baby wrap carriers are weight tested to hold up to 35 pounds. While our baby wraps can support toddlers up to this weight limit, most parents feel comfortable with a maximum weight of 20-25 pounds, given the stretchy material the carrier is made with.

Which lengths fit plus size bodies?

For a ring sling, our 84- or 94-inch lengths should work for most plus size caregivers. If you're wearing a toddler or you want more tail, go with the 94-inch.

For a stretchy baby wrap, our long length fits sizes XL-6X.

Is a wrap or ring sling more comfortable for a larger chest or belly?

They are both comfortable newborn and infant carriers for plus size bodies! They both are completely customizable fits each time you wear. As baby grows, a hip carry in a ring sling will be the more comfortable option.

I'm plus size. Do I need an extender for a ring sling or baby wrap?

Nope! Our size-inclusive longer lengths will fit you perfectly without anything extra.

So, which will it be? Ready to keep baby close? Whether you go for the grab-and-go ring sling or the snug, womb-like wrap, you really cannot go wrong. Every hope&plum carrier is designed for real bodies and real life, sized XXS to 6X. Shop your favorite below.
